On Saturday, October 4, 300 runners and walkers came out on a beautiful fall day to participate in WestCare Health System Foundation's 10th Annual "Smoky Streak".
The scenic route along the Tuckaseegee River to Webster Baptist Church and the wonderful weather provided the perfect atmosphere for the run. Runners from as far away as Hillsborough, NC participated in the race.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, proceeds from this event will go to fund a digital mammography machine at Harris Regional Hospital. In keeping with the theme, t-shirt logos were pink and survivors of breast cancer were given a rose.
The addition of electronic race timing chips in the runner’s bibs proved to be a tremendous success. This helped in determining the winners and decreasing the time after the race for the awards.
The overall winners for the 10k were Hector Sanchez with a time of 36:26 and Natalie Welch with a time of 45:28. The overall winners for the 5k were Coates Kennerly with a time of 16:45 and April Moore with a time of 24:02. Full race results and photos can be found by following the link on www.westcare.org.
“We would like to thank the runners, volunteers and sponsors who helped make this year’s race a success,” stated Michele Garashi, Director of Foundation for WestCare.
